Enough hurricane. Some football talk: Herbie awards

His Big 12 South sleeper is Texas. Hah! He needs to learn the concept of "sleeper." Fine if he thinks A&M is going to win. But the sleeper would be someone who is off the radar, and UT certainly isn't. So he'd have to say Texas Tech or OK State(clearly not Baylor), but UT or OU are not sleepers. Perhaps he should have renamed the "Sleeper" column "Serious contender."

Prettiest coeds: 4 SEC schools to lead off the list. Hah. No LSU or Florida though, which is kind of surprising. I would guess both (and FSU and Miami and Texas) are better than South Carolina.

Best game day coach: He has Mack Brown ahead of Kirk Ferentz? Are you kidding me? Chirag, sound off on your boy Mack.

Gary Crowton (former head coach at La Tech) is his 3rd best offensive coordinator. We'll see if he can get the Ducks rolling.

I don't know how Cal's Def Coordinator Bob Gregory got ahead of LSU's own Bo Pelini. Not like Bo didn't pull it off at Nebraska AND Oklahoma.

I was screaming at work when I saw the Mack Brown thing.

Gregory is a fantastic defensive coordinator. Considering Cal hasn't had any good athletes on D since Andre Carter left and they've still been pretty solid on that side of the ball (at least, for a Pac-10 team), I can't knock him. Better than Pelini? Arguable. Certainly not as accomplished but he's also never had the personnel Pelini has had.

Hey. Tell that to Texas Tech.

Texas Tech runs a gimmick offense. If you don't have top level athletes, you don't have any chance of stopping them.

Cal held SC, a team that runs a real offense, to 205 total yards. Reggie Bush, arguably the most explosive player in the country, was held to eight carries for 23 yards and one catch for six. Overall, they allowed 192 points last season, second in the Pac-10 to SC and fewer than Georgia, Tennessee, Miami, Michigan, Oklahoma, Texas, LSU, Ohio State, Florida and Iowa and none of those teams play in an all-out offense conference like Cal does, and all of them have more players that were or will be high round NFL draft picks than Cal did.

(Of the teams I checked, which is mostly just the major programs, Auburn, Virginia Tech, Florida State, Wisconsin and SC allowed fewer points than Cal and, again, all of those teams have high round draft picks on their rosters.)

Mack Brown, good recruiter, bad big game coach.

Remember, while Texas won the Rose Bowl, they only won it by a field goal. That's Mack Brown's biggest win in a game that mattered to date.

BTW, A lot of people thought Norm Chow's offense was gimmicky also, but USC won 1 1/2 national titles with it. (Chow, like Mike Leach, cut his teeth at BYU)

Maybe Cal has a problem with "gimmicky" offenses. In which case, they better hope UCLA doesn't hire Leach.
