Fumbles on end arounds

David Tyree dropped the ball on an end around and picked it up about ten yards behind the line of scrimmage. Started to run upfield, wound up getting absolutely DRILLED by Steve Foley. So he lost three yards. Now, my question is: when this happens, why don't the wideouts or running backs just pull up and throw the ball away? I know that's not their first thought, but that was a busted play that wasn't going anywhere, and Charger jerseys were about to swarm him.
